Weathering with island is based on Funakawa’s experiences on an uninhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea, which he has visited repeatedly since 2017. The work was composed of symbolic images and videos generated from experiences on the island, 3D-printed models based on the island’s weathering processes, plants from the island, drift objects, and the time required to distil fresh water from seawater.

On the island, tides, waves, stones, wind, plants, and the smell of decaying drift objects appear not as background, but as presences that seem to have their own agency. This work understands weathering not as a distant geological change, but as a relation unfolding between place, body, object, and time.
